Majority of the city’s key sights are just a short distance from one another. Melbourne is definitely the self elected Australia’s cultural capital. This claim is backed by its many finest theaters, festivals, art galleries, performances and topnotch restaurants. Some places that you should take note in your list when planning for a Melbourne holiday are:

Healesville Sanctuary

This sanctuary opened back in 1934 and it specializes in local Australian wildlife. The native Australian art works are presently displayed in the contemporary Ian Potter Center. Meanwhile, the international works of art are still exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Luna Park

This park is identified with its gigantic, moon face entrance. The picturesque railway is the oldest constantly operated roller coaster in the whole world. You would not need to pay admission to Luna Park but you would have to purchase tickets for actual rides at the ticket box.

This is located at the Carlton Gardens, and it is the country’s largest museum. It is home to nine main exhibition areas, which include an indoor rainforest, some dinosaur exhibits, the mind and body gallery, as well as the insect and butterfly collection that showcases real life insects. Melbourne is a city that satisfies your holiday needs whether you’re into shopping, active or spectator sports, ethnic dining, cultural events such as gallery browsing or jazz or classical concerts or just strolling around soaking up the atmosphere of this wonderful city called Marvellous Melbourne by all who visit. Here’s your quick guide to capturing the essence of Melbourne in just a day.

The best way to get a handle on the city is by taking the tram. Melbourne has the world’s oldest tram network. The current tram network runs over 200 miles and it’s still expanding. Climb aboard a City Circle tram and drink in the city’s history as your tram weaves though the city centre.

Jump off at the Parliament House tram stop to view some grand buildings including the Princess Theatre, the grand Windsor Hotel, Parliament House, the Paris End of Collins Street, and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Tickets for single journeys within the city and to inner suburbs cost A$2.20 for adults. The best deal for sightseeing is to buy a 2-Hour Metcard, good for unlimited transport on buses or trams for up to 2 hours.

Another great way to get your bearings on Melbourne is to climb up to the Melbourne Observation Deck that gives you a bird’s eye view of the city. From here you can pick out landmarks such as the Botanical Gardens and the Yarra River.

For the next section of your getting to know Melbourne trip, head for Victoria Market to browse the goods and have lunch in one of the many eateries. The biggest open-air market in the southern hemisphere, Victoria Market was established in 1878 and hawks everything from fresh produce to clothing, leather goods, jewellery, handicrafts and souvenirs. Just the place for that stuffed koala or Crocodile Dundee hat.

In the afternoon, it’s time to experience some of Melbourne’s many green spots. Over a quarter of the inner city is reserved as leisure area resulting in a green and leafy city. Saunter through Treasury Gardens then hop across to Fitzroy Gardens to peek at Captain Cook’s Cottage. Then if wildlife is your thing, take in the sharks at the Melbourne Aquarium opposite Southbank, one of the suburbs south of the city centre. In fact the newly-renovated south bank of the river is a great place to visit with its bars, restaurants and shops.

If you’re in the mood for art, wander over to Federation Square with its host of galleries. You’ll find the Australian art collection in the Ian Potter Centre. Not far away is the new National Gallery of Victoria International. Its permanent collection includes four Gainsboroughs and four Constables together with works by El Greco, Monet, and Manet.

In fact, there’s much more to Melbourne than you can experience in a day. But this orientation tour is sure to whet your appetite for more. Fortunately Melbourne City hotels are plentiful and of tremendous range and variety so you’re sure to find something to suit as you stay longer in this wonderful city.

One of the greatest pleasures of a visit to Melbourne is the opportunity to sample its cosmopolitan offerings. Where else in the world can you sip an espresso in Little Italy, shop in Chinatown and wander through Little Vietnam all in one morning? And you still have the rest of the day to dine at Greek restaurants and savour Turkey, India and the Middle East in the Brunswick district.

To say that Melbourne is cosmopolitan is an understatement. For one thing, Australia’s second-largest city is home to more people of Greek descent than any other city except Athens. In fact, nearly a third of Melbournians were either born overseas or have parents who were born overseas. What this means to you the holiday maker is the chance to savour a uniquely international Australian experience. So what are some of the more interesting ethnic quarters?

The city’s Greek Precinct situated in and around Lonsdale Street has its origins in the 1930s. Today the area is home to Greek restaurants, cafes and cake shops along with travel agents, book and music stores, and specialised shops that provided wedding and christening garments..

Melbourne’s Chinatown is Australia’s oldest, dating back to the 1850s gold rush years. It began as a few shops and boarding houses in Celestial Avenue to cater for arrivals from southern China. Today’s Chinatown is a vibrant, colourful place jammed with shops and restaurants.

There’s a Chinese Museum in Cohen Place with five floors of exhibitions and the Tianjin Garden houses a Chinese pavilion, rockery and water garden.

Italian immigrants once favoured the inner-city suburb of Carlton. Though many have moved to the suburbs, this leafy stretch lined with Victorian terraces still house scores of Italian shops, cafes and restaurants. It’s a fine place to go for an espresso or a full Italian meal.

The Vietnamese have made Victoria Street into their community and the area’s famed for its good, cheap food including pho (noodle soup) and spring rolls.

If you arrive in Melbourne during one of these many festivals you’re in for a special treat. Chinese New Year is a time of gongs, fireworks and gambolling dragons, Divali the Hindu festival of lights a time of flickering candles and oil lamps, and the Lao have their own dignified Buddhist celebrations. Melbourne’s Italians hold the Lygon Street Festa every October which features the Italian waiters’ race and a spaghetti-eating contest. If you want to learn more about Melbourne’s cosmopolitan history, visit the Immigration Museum. Here you can find out all about the city’s multicultural past and present. The museum is located in the restored Old Customs House building which was formerly the gateway to a new life for those who aspired to make Melbourne their home. Melbourne’s multicultural makeup adds a tremendous zest to the city. Another of the city’s joys is the fine range of accommodation. Among the fine range of Melbourne City hotels are the Comfort Inn and Suites Flagstaff City Melbourne and the HarbourView Apartment Hotel Melbourne.

Not long ago, this area was a grim eyesore of run-down docks but a renovation program during the 1990s transformed the southern bank of Melbourne’s Yarra River into a clean, green and modern city leisure zone. Today’s Southbank offers something for everybody. Here’s you guide to culture, shopping, eating and drinking, and entertainment in this beguiling part of Melbourne.

First, let’s look at Southbank’s cultural offerings. The queen of them all is the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road. It offers extensive collections and exhibitions along with a range of programs, guided tours, and cultural and social events and activities.

Nearby is the Arts Centre, a complex that includes something for everyone including Hamer Hall for concerts. Here you can enjoy varied performances such as those of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. There’s also the State Theatre for opera performances, BlackBox for cabaret, modern music, stand-up comedy, and experimental theatre, Fairfax Studio for drama, and Playhouse for drama.

Also in the area are the Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony, NGV International, and Malthouse Theatre.

For shopping, the Arts Centre Market is held on Sundays along the footways at the eastern end of the riverbank. This market features more than 150 stalls offering the products of local artisans. All of the stallholders’ wares must pass a quality examination in order to be sold here so you’re assured of good buys.

Then there’s the Southgate Leisure Precinct housing more than 40 unique shops, along with a food court, restaurants, bars and cafés. It’s a great place to pick up Australian souvenirs and unique gifts.

In fact the Southbank eating and drinking scene is comprehensive and has a distinct Mediterranean touch with its al fresco venues, terraces, balconies, with colourful parasols. The main strip, Southgate Promenade offers a host of pubs, restaurants, and food mall to choose from. It stretches all the way from the Southgate complex to the Crown Casino. You can often enjoy street performers and people watching with your meal and fabulous views of the illuminated city skyline at night.

Finally for entertainment, you can do no better than head for the Crown Entertainment Complex, Other than being the largest casino in the southern hemisphere, the complex also houses an array of restaurants and shops.

Other than gambling, you can enjoy a range of shows at The Palms at Crown and the Club Odeon and Fusion nightclubs features music from live bands and top DJs from Melbourne and abroad.

If you’re short on time and want to do everything in one place, just head for the Southgate Arts & Leisure Precinct which offers upmarket shops and award-winning restaurants, chic cafes, food courts and a five-star hotel.

But it would be a shame to rush. Not only is Mebourne’s Southbank a great place to visit, it makes a fine area to base yourself during your Melbourne holiday. You can choose from a fine range of Southbank hotels including the Crown Towers Hotel Melbourne and the Pacific International Apartments Southbank Melbourne.

Richard Greaves has over 20 years experience in the travel industry and writes for Cheaper than Hotels. Cheaper Than Hotels offers Southbank hotels as Crown Towers Hotel Melbourne and Pacific International Apartments Southbank Melbourne.

The Art Centre shaped like a ballerina’s tutu and lit up every night with thousands of different coloured lights, is the home of performing arts, hosting everything from the Australian Ballet Company, to various operas and plays. The adjacent National Gallery of Victoria continues this theme, running a mix of temporary and permanent exhibitions, with a large collection of both international and national works that explore every facet of the art world. However if the formal restraints of the high end of art and culture is not your thing, Melbourne is also considered to be Australia’s live music capital, meaning you can go to any of the world class pubs and hear great live music from some of the city’s most talented up and coming artists.

Like all Australians, sport is an institution in Melbourne. The jam packed sporting calender begins in January when the stars of international tennis compete in the grand slam Australia Open, where the atmosphere is magical and the weather is divine. The thrills continue at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG, which hosts the very best in cricket during the summer and Australian rule football during the winter. As the home of the Australian football code, known as AFL, the MCG is mecca for lovers of football and cricket, with organized tours taking you inside the stadium’s memorabilia filled halls and even onto the ground itself. Throughout the year you can also enjoy basketball, swimming, soccer and many other sports in Melbourne’s specially designed sports precinct.

For lovers of couture and the latest fashion, Melbourne offers the best stores ranging from designer brands to vintage bargains. Melbourne Central, the cities largest shopping complex has over 300 stores sure to placate any shop-a-holic regardless of their personal style and budget. Whilst unlike the unique and modern architecture of Melbourne Central, the Queen Victoria Market is world famous for its great buys and earthy atmosphere. Here you get so much more than a shopping district, out in the open air the scene is vibrant and cosmopolitan, complete with performing buskers and a variety of produce and goods, making for a truly multicultural and unique affairs that has drawn tourists to this historic site for more than 125 years.

A truly diverse and multicultural city, dining in Melbourne is a treat with restaurants covering every nationality in the world. For fine dinning, Southgate is the place to be, offering unparalleled views of the splendid Yarra River and so many choices.

Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the award winning restaurants, a quick lunch at the less formal Riverside Food Court or a coffee and sweet at the numerous cafés and bars.

In terms of multicultural restaurants the options are endless, try Italian food at the stylish Lygon Street, Carlton or Greek food in the very Mediterranean Russell street. But if you’re looking for Chinese food, look no further than Melbourne’s enchanting Chinatown. Brightly coloured Chinatown offers traditional laneway eateries that will transport you to lively streets of Beijing. More than just food Chinatown, serves up unique shops and stalls as well as Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Japanese restaurants that are sure to tantalize the tastebuds.

With so much to offer it is impossible to squeeze Melbourne into one short article. This sophisticated city may be less than 200 years old and constantly changing but its vibrant energy never fails to excite and enthrall tourists. Impossible not to love, Melbourne’s bustling atmosphere of luscious parks, top restaurants, great shops and rich culture cannot be explained, it has to be experienced.

Corporate relocations are a commonplace occurrence in this day and age. With most relocations tending towards an international scale for the short term, while a more local/interstate scale is often observed for long-term and permanent staff movements. Melbourne is a common destination for staff relocations, and when relocating, you want to find an apartment in Melbourne – because an apartment anywhere else defeats the purpose.

The common nature of relocations often means that corporations will place employees in an apartment in Melbourne for a short term arrangement, until the employee finds a place of their own. This process usually takes 1-2 months for permanent relocations, while those relocating temporarily can find their company will put them up in an apartment in Melbourne for anywhere between 1 month to 2 years. Companies will sometime utilise hotels or serviced apartment hotels for shorter stays, but their exorbitant costs makes them prohibitive for long-term stays, which is why long-stay accommodation is such an attractive alternative.

Most apartments in Melbourne are concentrated in the CBD, Southbank, Docklands and South Melbourne areas of the city. Usually they will be in large apartment complexes with internal lifts, internal laundry facilities, fully equipped kitchens and most will have a spectacular view out over their location. Costs of the apartment in Melbourne you choose will be reflected in the location of the apartment, size and facilities offered – be it just a building manager you can call when there are maintenance issues to resolve, to those apartments located in Freshwater Place, or the Eureka Towers, which come complete with concierge, gymnasium, pool, sauna and rooftop garden areas – which are your own little oasis in the middle of the city.

Since most companies pay for their initial relocation accommodation, the most in-demand apartments are those which are close to which ever office or location the employee is relocating to. This is why you will see that properties in Southbank and the CBD will come off the market – rented almost as soon as they come on the market – because of the sheer concentration of major companies having large offices located in those areas – if not their actual headquarters.

Since most companies are well established, they don’t want to risk their employee’s well-being, and consequently their productivity, by placing them in a sub-standard apartment in Melbourne. No matter how convenient the apartment is, if it isn’t truly fit to live in, then it will impact badly on the well-being of employees. This is why most companies only use reputable apartment providers, such as Corporate Keys. These companies are established providers that offer cost-effective, well appointed apartments in Melbourne.

In the news: Last March 12 at the Melbourne International Motor Show auction conducted by the Shannons, a unique 1948 Mercedes-Benz A320 two-door cabriolet that has never made production was sold for $350,000 in front of huge crowd consisting of around 1,500 people at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Despite the limited lots available as compared to previous years, the Melbourne International Motor Auction was able to sell more than $2.7 million and obtain an outstanding clearance rate of over 90 percent of all lots. Out of the $2.7 million, around $600,000 was spent on vehicle number plates of which five VicRoads’ new signature plates have been sold for a total of $154,000 ahead of their public launch which was scheduled yesterday, March 13.

The sale of the rare Mercedes-Benz was the highlight of the auction. The striking two-tone blue fully restored vehicle was discovered in an isolated state in Indonesia in the year 1980 and was then brought to Australia where it was restored. Quality Mercedes parts such as the Mercedes brake caliper was used in restoration of the 1948 A320. A Mercedes-Benz brake caliper is an important component of any vehicle since it induces a speed-stopping amount of friction that slows down or stops a Benz vehicle and the 1948 A320 Cabriolet is not an exemption. The 1948 A320 two-door Cabriolet embodies the luxury image of Mercedes-Benz before the devastation of its German factories in World War II. Unfortunately for the A320 instead of making production was overtaken by the more technically advanced 300 series models.

Aside from the A320 Cabriolet, the 1930 Invicta S-Type Low Chassis which was previously owned by the Shannons’ founder Robert Shannon became an additional attraction at the auction. The bidding for the Invicta has also turned out to be an emotional event for both Shannons National Auction Manager Christophe Boribon and veteran auctioneer Bill Wellwood. The Invicta was sold in for $950,000.

Also for auction at the Shannons was the totally-restored 1971 Chrysler Charger R/T E38 coupe sold for a record price of $140,000 surpassing the record of a previously sold Charger R/T E38 at $128,000 which was auctioned last year at Shannons’ Sydney Motor Show auction.

Other cars sold at the auction includes a 1969 Holden Monaro HK GTS 327 coupe in superb condition was auctioned for $120,000, a 1968 Monaro HK GTS 307 coupe was also bought at $50,000 while a 1972 Ford Falcon XA GT sedan was sold for $34,500.

Here are some of the auction results:

• A fully-restored 1956 Holden FJ Utility sold at $61,000

• An un-restored one-owner 1957 Ford Mainline Utility sold for $33,000

• A well preserved one-owner Ford Fairlane ZC 351 V8 sedan sold for $21,000

• A magnificent vintage 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Saloon auctioned for $100,000

• Three-digit Victorian vitreous enamel plate ‘765’ was sold for $75,000 followed by the big-block plate ‘429’ which was sold for $70,000 while the ‘353’ was sold for $63,000

• Four and five-digit plates: the ‘2123’ was able to make $34,000, the ‘8168’ with $32,000, the ‘9.444’ gained $31,000 while the ’30.000’ and ’66.111’ which are considered the best of the five digit plates were sold for $27,000 each.

• The new VicRoads ‘Signature series’ personalized number plates did remarkably well with the GT selling nearly three times its estimate at $53,000 while the ‘RR’ and ‘SS’ were each sold for $36,000. The GTO was sold for $17,000 and the ‘RT’ was taken for $12,000.

Leasing commercial property is a very important decision so the more research you can do, the better.  Not only do you have to find a property that is in good condition and has great parking, but you also have to worry about finding the best location.  Location is everything.  The location of a property will make it easy to get to, have great impact when signed and will attract potential staff.  The location will also give additional benefits to the building such as views from the building.  Below you will find the top areas to rent commercial property in the Melbourne area.

St. Kilda Road, Toorak Road and Domain Road

One of the best places to find commercial property in Melbourne is on St. Kilda Road.  Roads in the same area include Toorak Road and Domain Road, which all provide exquisite views of the surrounding Melbourne area.  Properties in this area will have stunning views of the Botanical Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance, Port Phillip Bay and Albert Park Lake.  These roads are located in the Business 5 Zone.

Financial Business District of Melbourne

A fabulous location for commercial property rental or purchase is in the business district of Melbourne.  Besides having spectacular views of the business and shopping areas, there are excellent views of the CBD.  You will be close to the Australian Stock Exchange and in walking distance of various important buildings in the financial business district and to the courts.  The views are not the only perk of having a property in the business district; being in the middle of this precinct means that there are unlimited amounts of transportation in close proximity to your building.  With shopping and other facilities close by, properties located in this area of Melbourne are highly attractive to both the buyer and leasers.

The Heart of Melbourne City

In the heart of Melbourne city, your commercial property will be a heartbeat away from all of the popular Melbourne districts such as the legal district, the financial business district and the great shopping areas.  If the property is located by Collins Street, there will be views of the town hall, the State Parliament House and Gardens, Port Phillip Bay, Albert Park and the spectacular Yarra River.  Transportation is extremely easy making your office easy to get to.  The Melbourne International Airport is 25 minutes away by car, and buses, trams and the Flinders Street Station are all in close proximity, while there are always an abundance of taxis also.

Remember, location should be essential for buyers and renters.  While you may not need to come to your office every day, the people who work for you will. No one wants their business to be in an area that is hard to find or where their clients may get lost.  Therefore, be smart when choosing a property to purchase or commit to with a lease.

Finally, ask yourself these questions before signing anything; is the building close to transportation?  Will the people working inside of the building be looking at wall or a gorgeous river or stunning view of the historic buildings in the area?

At the last day of the annual 2007 Melbourne International Motor Show, one of Australia’s premiere and largest automotive events, the popular auction event held in conjunction with the show conclude a total sales of $2.7 million AUD or about $2.1 million USD from the vintage vehicles and number plates auctioned.

One rare and elegant vintage car drew the interest of international and Australian car collectors at the 2007 Melbourne International Motor Show auction event. The car was a Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 2-door cabriolet that was originally built by the German luxury car maker some time in 1948. The car sold for a whopping $350,000 AUD or about $275,000 USD.

The car was actually a prototype model of a luxury coupe and was not put into production because of Germany’s involvement in World War II, which has led to the devastation of the company’s factories and other industrial facilities in the country. With the evolution of a much more advanced powertrain components like the single overhead camshaft engine, the platform of the 1948 Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 prototype was no longer used and the car was sold to a Dutch businessman and brought the car to Indonesia. In the late 1980s, an Australian businessman and car enthusiast found the car in the country and ship it to Melbourne.

The Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 cabrio measures about 5.5 meters and has 142-inch long wheelbase. Outside, the rare Mercedes-Benz cabriolet features a sleek two-tone blue exterior color and a soft top roof. On the inside, the restored leather seats remains in tack. The car is equipped with a 59kW side-valve engine under its hood. Well, the buyer should get Mercedes car cover to protect the exterior of this rare Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 cabriolet. And of course as a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, he can also get other Mercedes car covers for his vehicles.

Although the car went through a complete restoration, it looks like the original Mercedes-Benz W142 A320 prototype model developed in 1948, according to Max-Gerritt von Pein, the head of Mercedes-Benz Museum who inspected the car.

Going back to the 2007 Melbourne International Motor Show auction event, a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I sedan was sold for $100,000 AUD ($78,280 USD). The auctioneer said the car was owned by an Austrian aristocrat who served as a spy for the infamous German dictator Adolf Hitler.

In addition, several vehicle number plates significantly contribute to the total sales of the auction event including five new local Victorian Registration Signature Plates that sold for a total of $154,000 AUD. Four and five-digit plates sold for prices ranging from $27,000 AUD up to $32,000 AUD.

The most expensive number plate sold was the three-digit ’765′ Victorian vitreous enamel plate that was sold for $75,000 AUD or about $57,710 USD. Other top selling plates include ’429′ big-block plate for $70,000 AUD, and ’353′ plate sold for $63,000 AUD.

Audi unveiled its powerful trio – the TT Roadster, S3 and the A6 at the Melbourne International Motor Show on Friday, March 2. The models are scheduled to go on sale in Australia later this year.

Joerg Hofmann, Audi’s managing director, said the company is naturally thrilled to be able to introduce key new cars to the Australian market ahead of their actual launch date. “Since its introduction to Australia late last year, the new Audi TT has been a huge hit with Australian consumers. The new model is in high demand and we have buyers clamoring for their car to arrive,” Hofmann said.

He added, “We expect that the TT Roadster will be similarly popular. It will officially arrive in June 2007, however we will use the Melbourne unveiling as an opportunity to kick off our pre-sales campaign for this new model.”

The Audi TT Roadster will be launched in June. It will feature two engines including a 2.0 TFSI, and a 3.2 V6 quattro and these are priced at $77,500 and $92,900, respectively. Both engines feature the popular S-tronic transmission mated to an Audi cold air intake to boost performance of the roadster.

The new Audi S3, priced at around $66,000, is expected to arrive in Australia in June. The vehicle is equipped with a 2.0 TFSI engine with 188kW and a sporty 6-speed manual transmission. In the motor show, the automaker will showcase the brand new highlight color for the S3 – the Solar Orange.

The motor show will also flaunt the long-awaited Audi A6 allroad quattro successor. The A6 allroad quattro, which is scheduled to arrive in Australia in May, will be seen for the first time at the motor show. The vehicle is equipped with the 3.0 TDI engine. The Audi A6 allroad Quattro will be priced at around $106,000.

Also displayed at the motor show is the Audi R8 sportscar, which will be officially introduced to the auto market in September. The Audi R8 is priced at around $250,000 to $300,000.

Hofmann believes the line-up at the Melbourne International Motor Show is further proof of Audi’s growing popularity in Australia. “Thanks to our record sales in 2006, we are in a strong position to secure a range of highlight cars to continue to showcase the brand in a high-profile way in Australia,” he noted. “These new models will contribute to our sales growth target of more than 10 percent in 2007.”

Given her background on cars as an auto insurance director, Lauren Woods finds the world of cars to be constantly changing.
